Laurie Simmons, Lying House from her Walking and Lying Objects Series. Cibachrome Photgraph, Circa 1990. Numbered 24/50 on the reverse. The signature is obscured by the matting.

By the 1970s, American photographer Laurie Simmons (b. 1949) was staging scenes for her camera with objects on legs, dolls, ventriloquist dummies and people, to create photographs referencing domestic scenes. She is a part of “The Pictures Generation,” a group that came to prominence in the 70s.

Her “Walking and Lying Objects” series (1987-1991) included legs protruding from an hourglass, a gun, a globe and a house. This Cibachrome photograph is the “Lying House.”
